It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Tommy (Tom) Leon Owens, 83, of Rogersville, TN on December 7, 2024, surrounded by his wife and children.
Tom was born in Elk City, OK on November 8, 1941, the son of Albert Sydney Owens and Willa Lee Owens.
Tom enlisted in the United States Army in 1959, he later attended the Officer Candidate School and proudly served for 18 years. He completed tours in Vietnam as a Captain in the Army Corp of Engineers before his Honorable Discharge in 1977. He and Bonnie continued supporting Veterans by volunteering with the American Legion in Midland, TX.
He returned to work in the oil field as an independent drilling consultant where he found coworkers and friends who became like family. Their early morning meetings for coffee became a staple. Through the years Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, and his collection of old guns and coins. He also found joy in just driving around looking for "shortcuts." But his favorite hobby was betting on horse races with his best friend, Richard Nicholson; they were always after the next Triple Crown winner.
Tom will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, hardworking can-do attitude, and generous spirit. A master at sarcastic humor and witty timing, he was never one to let the truth get in the way of a good story. He could put a smile on anyone's face with one of his tall tales. A trusted confidant, as dependable as the day is long, being a father came naturally to him, a role he chose, loved, and thrived in which was only surpassed by his ability to be a grandfather.
He is preceded in death by his parents, aunts, beloved uncle, Bobby Wells, and grandson, Cayden Robinson.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Bonnie (Honaker) Owens, son, Heath Barkley (Afton) Robinson of New Brockton, AL, and daughter, Taylor (Matthew) McCroskey of Knoxville, TN. Grandsons, Luke, Gaven, Case, Seth, Myles, and Easton, and his sister, Lajuana Peskor, three stepsisters, and stepdaughter, Twyla Huddleston.
"Fear not, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name, you are mine." Isaiah 43:1
A family ceremony and interment of his remains along with a military burial service with full honors will be held at a later date.
