Thelma Jean Shaffer, 84, of Hiltons, VA, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 1, 2024. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, known for her warm spirit and dedication to her community.

Thelma was a proud graduate of Gate City High School and went on to earn multiple degrees in teletype and communications. She dedicated her career to public service, working for the Kingsport City Police Department and later retiring from the Scott County, VA, Sheriff's Department. Her commitment to serving others left a lasting impact on her colleagues and the community.

Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, T.J. Shaffer; her mother, Lolan Clark; her father, Vernon Clark; and her brother, Dewey Clark.

She leaves behind her loving family, including her sons, Michael Shaffer (wife Penny Shaffer) and Tim Shaffer; her brother, Bobby Clark; six grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Newland of Kingsport, and June Shaffer and husband Jim of Dayton, OH.

A graveside service will be held at Vermillion Family Cemetery, located on AP Carter Highway in Hiltons, VA, on Monday, November 4th, at 11:00 AM. Pastor Ronnie Horne and Preacher Rex McMurray will officiate. Special singers will provide music, and friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

A Celebration of Life service will follow on Saturday, November 9th, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at Glennwood Baptist Church, 2524 McMurray Hollow Road, Hiltons, VA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Fraternal Order of Police, Burgess Mills Lodge #11, c/o Johnny Peoples.
