Lt. Col. Roy D. Black

Lt. Col. Roy D. Black (Doug), United States Marine Corps, age 77 of Harriman, TN, passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2015. Born May 18, 1938 in Kingston, TN. He proudly and honorably served in the United States Marine Corps for 25 years. He was deployed for 3 tours in Vietnam as well as Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Okinawa, Japan. While in the Marine Corps, he received multiple commendations to include the Bronze Star Medal with Valor and decorations from the countries of Korea and Vietnam. He served three Marine Corps Generals that became Commandant of the Marine Corps. Member of the Davis Newman American Legion Post 53, where he served as Commander for several years, lifetime member of the VFW and member of Lt. Alexander Bonneyman Marine Corps League in Knoxville. Doug was of the Christian faith who believed God (Sky 6) was ever present in his life. He Served his church at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Harriman, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, C.R. Black and Winifred Willoughby of Harriman; and sister, Patricia B. LeGrand. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Vivian Janice Belew; sons, Brian D. Black (Katherine) of Fletcher, NC and Todd R. Black (Julie) of Dover, NH; four grandchildren, Scott N., Kevin R., Nichole A., and Cassidy L. Black; sister, Marilyn J. Black of Kingston. Doug had a tremendous respect and love for his fellow Veterans. He asked that in lieu of flowers to please donate to the Wounded Warriors Project. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 190 Circle Drive, Harriman, TN. A reception for those attending will follow in the fellowship hall.
