Joshua Charles Berry - aka "Bill Guthry," aka "Country" - age 42, left this earth on Tuesday, January 3rd at 11:25pm, surrounded by those who loved him.
Josh was a decorated combat Veteran who served 2 tours in Iraq protecting our country. After his military service, he got involved with Project Healing Waters, which is how he came to fall in love with fly fishing. His most prized possession was his drift boat, the "freedom floater." Josh very quickly became an avid fisherman, even gaining employment as a guide and traveling to Montana to compete in a national casting competition. When he wasn't fishing, you could usually find him hanging around the fly shop, shooting guns, or relaxing in his hammock.
Any of his friends would say that to know Josh was an honor and a privilege. He had a smile that could light up an entire room, an infectious laugh, the kindest heart, and an unmatched wit. He was a loyal friend, a fierce protector of those he cared about, and also had a great love for animals and nature. He was a history buff, gun enthusiast, and an excellent chef. There will certainly never be another like him, and the world seems a little darker with him gone, but we will take great comfort in the memories we share with him and in knowing that he is finally at peace.
A celebration of Josh's life will be held on Saturday, January 7th in Bristol, TN. Beginning at 3pm there will be a memorial float in his honor. Those who wish to participate in the float should meet at the South Holston River boat ramp at Holston View Dam Rd at 2:30. Afterward, there will be a quick, private ceremony for his closest family and friends. Then we will end the night in true Josh Berry style with a party at The Fly Box from 5-8pm to celebrate his incredible life, share stories, and lots of laughs.
This obituary was lovingly written by the Berry family. Trinity Memorial Centers Funeral Home (423-723-8177) is honored to serve them.
