John Alan Woods, 77, of Kingsport, TN, passed away after a long illness on Tuesday, February 6, 2024.
John was born to John Henry and Eva Woods of Logan, West Virginia. He moved to northeast Tennessee as a young child and spent the rest of his life here. John was known to be a passionate flea marketer, had been a golden glove champion in boxing as a young man, in 1962; he was also a wrestler, known as "Dr. Death." He always enjoyed eating at Mama's House Buffet. His grandchildren will remember him as enthusiastic gardener with a beautiful yard. John was a devoted and loving Papaw to his grandchildren who were his whole life. He was a Christian man, a founder of Spiritual Church of Jesus and a member of Orebank Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his loving wife, Edna Woods; sisters, Betty Puckett and Charlotte Ratliff; brother, Doug Woods; granddaughter, Angel Woods; daughter-in-law, Alice Woods
John will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Amy Woods Hiner; sons, Michael Woods (Kimberly), Phillip Woods (Nicole), James Woods (Donna Shipley); granddaughters, Jessica "Jessie" Defreece, Heather Defreece, Valeria "Mo" Defreece; grandson, Logan Shipley; uncle, Elijah Woods; brother-in-law, Buford Rhea (Debbie); nieces, Tammy Hicks and Kimberly Rains (Bobby); special cousins, Bo Clark, Junior Woods; special boxing buddy, Larry Dillow
The family would like to extend their gratitude to ETSU physicians, especially Dr. Peter Bockhorst. They also want to thank their friends, Harold and Tenille Shipley at Hillbilly Towing for their love and assistance.
The family will receive friends from 6 PM to 8 PM on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Trinity Memorial Centers, 1221 Stewball Circle, Kingsport, TN. The funeral service will follow at 8 PM with Pastors David Smith and Tony Hobbs officiating. Graveside committal will take place at 2 PM on Friday, February 16, 2024, at Ross Campground UMC Cemetery, 242 Ross Campground Road, Church Hill, TN. If attendees would like to drive in procession, we will be leaving Trinity Memorial Centers at 1:30 PM. All attendees at the graveside are asked to please park in the church parking lot. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
