Janice Lee Winstead

March 16, 1945 — April 9, 2023

Janice Lee Simpson Winstead a lifelong resident of Kingsport, went home on Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023. Janice was surrounded by her daughters until the end of her journey. Janice is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Winstead; her parents Charlie & Maida (Brown) Simpson; and a very special aunt, Sadie Brown.
Janice was a nurse for over 40 years serving those in geriatrics specializing in Alzheimer's Disease, this was her true calling and she was a true advocate for her patients and their families. If you knew Janice or if you worked with/for Janice you know that she was a dedicated and loving nurse who believed the elderly deserved the utmost respect, love, and dignity. She worked until the age of 70 doing what she loved most.
Janice leaves behind her two loving daughters, Lisa Fleenor-Hammonds of Kingsport (and son-in-law Roger Hammonds) and Sherry King-Tilson & husband David Tilson of Johnson City.
Janice was most proud of her title of "Nana" with the arrival of her first grandchild Dalton Hammonds. Nana and Dalton were best friends from the start and she loved him dearly, you could catch them on a Saturday just hanging out.
Her first granddaughter Rachel Hammonds Lady (Dalton Lady-husband) immediately shared a bond with her Nana most likely because she was just like her Nana in almost every way, they enjoyed sleepovers and remained close until the end of her journey.
Her third grandchild Holden Hammonds was a joy to her and she talked often about his kindness and how much he reminded her of his father when he was a teenager.
Her youngest grandchild Skyla Tilson thought her Nana was beautiful and funny and she loved spending time with her playing outside in Nana's "playground". During her illness, Skyla would pray for her daily to heal.
Janice loved her children and grandchildren with all of her heart, but in her last days, she expressed that her first great-grandchild Layla was the absolute love of her life. They were best friends, each other's person, each other's heart. They spent countless hours having sleepovers, baking, playing and just being together, they loved each other unconditionally.
As well as Layla she was blessed with two additional great-grandchildren who she found such joy in simply seeing their smiling faces, Sandler and Sadie were very special to her, and in her last days she talked about not getting to see them grow up and how she wished that she could see each of her great-grandchildren grow up.
Janice also left behind two brothers who she loved, Wayland Simpson (Alma Simpson) of Kingsport and Stanley Simpson (Donna Simpson of Clovis, NM) as well as a nephew Douglas Simpson of Kingsport.
In addition, Janice leaves behind two bonus children Tony Winstead and Lisa Winstead Pereria as well as a bonus granddaughter Amanda Tilson.
Janice was fortunate to have many special friends, family, and co-workers. Special Friends and Neighbors Hartsel Livesay and Carl Bowman, former co-worker Kenny Jones and special "daughter" Angie Shaffer Dean.
The family would like to give special thanks to the following people who provided care for Janice and the family. ETSU Family Medicine with special thanks to Dr. Jake Weaver, Dr. Erin Harris, and Dr. Trask Printz who provided care, love, understanding, and dignity. The team of Amedisys Hospice of Kingsport and most of all the staff of W3-Wilcox Hall-Holston Valley nurses Tabitha and Crystal and caregivers Haley and Hannah and Shayne are truly doing the work of God in providing end-of-life care.
