James Edward Akers

James Edward Akers, 90, of Kingsport, TN, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 21, 2024. He passed away at the CLC at Mountain Home, VA, Johnson City.


James was born on May 26th, 1933, in Sullivan County, Tennessee. He proudly served the United States in the Air Force for 10 years. He was a successful master HVAC technician and electrician. He attended Mount Vernon Independent Methodist Church, where he was a song leader for many years. James enjoyed singing, fishing, sight-seeing, and one thing for sure he loved eating. He was a loving grandfather and great-grandfather.


He was preceded in death by his parents, James "Jim" Akers and Mary Gray Akers, and sisters, Hester Bright and Margaret Harper.

James is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Dorothy Eller Akers; his children, Debbie Lynn Powers (Jack) and Sherry Ann McGee; his grandchildren, Jenna Lynne Spangler (David) and Alesha Brianne Powers (Brandon); great-grandchildren, Brayden Powers and Camden Powers; sisters Elsie Wallen (Charlie), Libby Roberts, Evelyn Kidd (Alan), Anne Cradic (Ray), and Judy Johnson; and several nieces and nephews too numerous to list.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 25th, 2024, at Trinity Memorial Centers in Kingsport, Tennessee, at 11:00 AM. Memorial services will follow at 12:00 until 1:00 PM. Pastor Rick Vannoy and Pastor Richard Fleming will be presiding. Ralph and Shelby Roberts and Becky Lawson will provide special musical accompaniment. Graveside services and Military Honors will be observed at Mountain Home National Cemetery at 2:00 PM. All attendees wishing to attend graveside services are reminded that we will be departing from the funeral home promptly at 1:15 PM.

Pallbearers are, Jack Powers, Brayden Powers, Camden Powers, David Spangler, Andrew Godsey, and Brandon Ramey. Honorary pallbearer is Millard Johnson.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the doctors and staff of Mountain Home VA and caretakers in the CLC. Special mention of Holly, Ann-Malone, Blake, Kari, and Miracle.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
