Gary M. Holland, 74, of Kingsport, TN, peacefully passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on November 12, 1950, in Lansing, MI, Gary moved with his family to Kingsport, TN, at the age of 18 months. He grew up in Fall Branch, graduating from Fall Branch High School in the Class of 1968. A lover of music, Gary showcased his talent as a bass player in two local bands, filling the lives of many with rhythm and joy.
Gary's life was defined by service and love. He met the love of his life, Diane Vesser in 1969. In 1970, he was drafted into the United States Army, serving with distinction as a Military Policeman until his honorable discharge in 1972. During his service, he married Diane. Together, they built a home and a family in Kingsport, where Gary began a career in retail.
Gary's passions extended far beyond his professional life. A man of many interests, he was an avid fan of UT football, a skilled woodworker, and a curious enthusiast of space exploration. His heart, however, was dedicated to his community. As a member of the Optimist Club and a board member of the Tennessee Hunger Coalition, Gary worked tirelessly to uplift others. As president of Hunger First, he brought hope and sustenance to countless individuals in need.
One of Gary's most cherished roles was embodying the joy and wonder of Christmas. As a beloved Santa Claus, he brought magic to life at malls, parades, and community events, leaving smiles on the faces of young and old alike. He was also fondly known as "The Candy Man," delighting crowds by spinning cotton candy at Walmart and Funfest.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Edith Crook, Gary's forever best friend, as well as the VA Hospital and the staff at Signature Healthcare in Elizabethton, TN, for their extraordinary care during his final days.
Gary was preceded in death by the love of his life, Diane Holland; his parents, C.L. and Wilma Holland; his sister, Jan Roberts; and a dear family member, Beatrice Martin.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Brandi Holland (Chuck Castillo) and Jessie "Tank" Holland; his cherished grandchildren, Mikaylah Stapleton (fiancé Josh), Morgan Solace (husband Kayden), Marin Castillo (partner Delanie), and Michael Castillo; and one adored great-grandchild, Jeremiah McKee. He also leaves behind his sister, Shaune Eberhart (Jerry), brother-in-law, Ronnie Roberts, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and aunts.
A visitation will be held at Trinity Memorial on Thursday, December 5, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with a celebration of Gary's life to follow. A graveside service with military honors, provided by the American Legion Hammond Post 3/Gate City 265, will take place on Friday, December 6, at 11:00 AM at Milburnton Cemetery.
Pallbearers will include Patrick Massie-Crook, Cody Massie-Crook, Kayden Solace, Josh Bowen, Michael Castillo, and Brandon Crook. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeremiah McKee, Jerry Crook, Shaun Crook, and Mitch Eaves.
