Dossie Ann "Sue" McReynolds, 85, of Kingsport, TN, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2023.
Sue was born in Bluefield, West Virginia. She was of school age when the family traded in the modern conveniences of town life and moved to the mountainous country life of Wise, Virginia, back to her mother's people. Sue spent the rest of her childhood there with her three sisters, younger brother, and mother. The children walked a long way to attend the tiny Maple Grove School, a stark contrast from the one attended in the city. She later attended J. J. Kelly High School.
She met and married Coeburn born Ted McReynolds. Shortly thereafter, the couple moved cross country to Los Angeles County, California. There they started their family and lived for over a decade before deciding to return to the mountains. They settled in Kingsport and continued raising their family. Sue was an avid volunteer in the community, giving her time and effort in a variety of settings and populations. She participated in church ministries, gave support to migrant workers, visited local nursing homes, coordinated parties at Green Valley Development Center, was a summer camp counselor for mentally challenged youth, and participated in natural conservation efforts. This included work at Bays Mountain Park, to which she was a long-time association member and volunteer naturalist. She assisted with annual events, including quilting demonstrations. Sue participated in programs for local immigrants to the US, helping them to assimilate and to speak and read English. She often worked with young people, including programs that dealt with those on probation. Sue believed in human rights, in empowering women, and the pursuit of humanitarian efforts. She was a strong supporter of public education and education in general. Sue earned a BA in home economics from East Tennessee State University with an endorsement in early childhood development. She worked as a preschool teacher for many years in Colonial Heights.
Sue is preceded in death by her daughter, Donna McReynolds and son, Russell McReynolds, as well as all her siblings.
Those left to cherish Sue's memory include her husband of nearly sixty-seven years, Ted; daughter, Amy McRey; son, Jason McReynolds; grandchildren, Jeremy McReynolds, Geoffrey McReynolds, Bridgett Beck, Jae Whitaker, Taron Begay, Tedd Begay, Akasha McReynolds, Nicholas McReynolds; multiple great-grandchildren.
