Daniel Gordon Yates, affectionately known as Captain Dan Yates, 52, of Johnson City, TN, passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at his home.


He was born on July 4, 1971, in Brunswick, Maine, to Marjorie Ann Prue and Richard Louis Yates. In addition to his parents, Dan is preceded in death by his brothers, Mike and Jon.


Dan grew up in Maine learning all about the ocean and lobstering with his dad, which is where his love for the ocean began. He dedicated over 30 years of his life to a fulfilling career as a merchant marine chief mate. He was so proud of the license he held being a master of towing vessels upon oceans and western rivers. Prior to starting his career as a merchant marine, he dedicated himself to the Army/Army Reserves for 7 years.


His life could be characterized by the profound love he had for his family and friends. Dan never met a stranger. His kind heart and generous spirit touched many lives, and he will always be dearly loved by those who knew him. He cherished moments of sitting on his deck, where he would spend time with his family and friends, when not at work.


Dan is survived by his loving wife, Crystal; step-daughter, Ariel Green; son, Daniel Edward Yates; and grandson, Daniel Edward Yates, Jr.


Dan will be remembered for his loving warm heart that he had for others. A celebration of life is being planned at a later date and time in his home state of Maine.
