Conley Ray Hammonds

Conley "Con" Ray Hammonds, 66, of Gate City, VA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 10, 2025, with his family by his side.

Born and raised in Gate City, Con was a proud native who spent over 25 years working at the Cotton Mill, where he met the love of his life. A true outdoorsman at heart, Con loved farming, caring for his animals, and spending time on the land he called home. He was especially fond of his birds and took pride in being a beekeeper-he could watch his bees for hours.

He loved to hunt, tinker with farm equipment, and was always up for fixing something on the farm. Whether he was working cattle, putting up fencing, or just sitting in the yard soaking in the view of his land, Con was at peace. Music filled his days, and he never passed up a good joke or a chance to cut up and laugh with friends and family.

More than anything, Con loved spending time with his son and grandson-those were the moments that meant the most.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Shelby Jean Hammonds; his brother, Wayne Hammonds; nephew, Brian Hammonds; son, Jonathan; and daughter, Jessica.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 31 years, Lisa Hammonds; his son, Conley Matthew Hammonds; and his beloved grandson, Malicah. He is also survived by two stepsons, Chris and Cameron Browder; brothers, Rick Hammonds (LaDonna), and Steve Hammonds (Helen); sisters, Lisa Darnell (Lee), Brandi Hammonds; stepmother, Joyce Marie Hammonds; stepsisters, Melinda Carter and Melissa Gibson; many nieces and nephews; and close friends, Josh and Christina Smith.

Receiving of family and friends will be held on Tuesday, April 15th, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Trinity Memorial. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, April 16th, at the Conley Hammonds Cemetery (468 Clay Hollow Lane, Gate City, VA). Pallbearers will be family and friends.
