Carol Sue Carter

Carol Varney Carter was born in Delbarton, West Virginia on June 6th, 1947. She died on August 5th, 2024 at her home, after a valiant battle with ovarian cancer. Carol was the daughter on the late Ben and Ophelia Edwards Varney. She grew up in Matewan, West Virginia and later Buskirk, KY. She was a graduate of Magnolia High School in Matewan, and then graduated from West Virginia University. She subsequently graduated from Tufts University with a Masters degree and then became a Registered Dietitian. Carol was married to Walton Carter for 37 years until his death in 2019. They initially lived in Fort Myers, FL, later Valdosta, GA, Greensboro, GA, Chattaroy, WV, and then moved to Kingsport, TN, where they lived until their deaths. In addition to her parents and husband, Carol was preceded in death five weeks ago by her sister, Benita Varney Barker.

Over the course of her career, she worked in many hospitals and clinics teaching not only her patients, but also the family, and often the medical residents and physicians, about diabetes, treatment, and complications of this disease. At the time of her retirement, she was employed with the Diabetes Education Center, later Ballad, in Kingsport, TN. Carol retired from her position there only after she was diagnosed with cancer. She was in her 70s at this time and had worked for over 50 years. She devoted her life to the patients and diabetes education.

Survivors include her brothers, Robert (Karen) Varney of Blountville, TN, Gary (Anetha) Varney of McCarr, KY, and Lesley (Rosie) Varney of Pikeville, KY. She is also survived by her stepson, Steven Carter of Greenville, SC, as well as her nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins.

Services will be Saturday, August 17th, 2024 at 2:00pm at Crossroads Methodist Church in Kingsport, TN with Pastor Randy Lantz officiating. Burial will be at a date to be determined at Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City, TN. She will be placed with her husband. The family would like to thank Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice in Kingsport, especially her nurse Amanda, for their excellent care of Carol. Trinity Memorial Centers, 1221 Stewball Circle, Kingsport, TN is assisting the family with arrangements.
