Wylie Benjamin “Pete” Estes, 66, of Kingsport, TN, and formerly of Valdosta, GA, passed away suddenly on April 28, 2020.
Wylie was born in Lancaster, SC to Wylie Wilson Estes and Doris “Ottie” Ellis. He joined the Army shortly after graduating from high school, and proudly served our country for 22 years before retiring at the rank of Command Sergeant Major in 1993. After his retirement from the military, he earned his Masters in Human Resources from the University of Tennessee in 1996, and later became a SHRM Senior Certified Professional. Wylie worked as a Human Resource Manager, Director, and Consultant throughout his HR career. He also developed a passion for teaching Human Resources, taking on the roles of Adjunct Professor, Academic Advisor, and HR Mentor. Even after retirement, he continued teaching for Webster and Park University until the time of his passing.
Wylie was a devoted father to his children and an instant friend to anyone lucky enough to cross his path. He was an avid runner, who continued competing in races even after his battle with cancer, including the Disney Marathon. He also enjoyed whittling wood and spending time outdoors, whether he was doing yard work, exercising, or just relaxing in the fresh air and sunshine.
Wylie is survived by his wife and fellow veteran, Renee Estes, whom he met at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC. They married on August 1, 1980 after a whirlwind romance, and would have celebrated their 40th anniversary this year.
He is also survived by his sister, Cathy Davis; his seven children, Tina Culver, Wylie J. Estes, Richard (Cara) Estes, Wendy (William) Edwards, Jamie (Michael) Anderson, Angel (Nathan) Neilson, and Marie Stephens; and his seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather and mentor, Clark Wright; his brothers, Steve and Dale Estes; and his sister, Pat Steele.
Following a private ceremony, he will be laid to rest at Mountain Home National Cemetery.
